Early January 2026, Irish National Citizens Parliament members Con Cronin and Niall Mahon presented the resolutions produced by the Irish National Citizens Parliament at a meeting with MEPs and members of the European Commission in Brussels.

Con and Niall joined a delegation of Citizens鈥 Parliament members from Austria, the Czech Republic, and Slovenia, who are all part of a three-year research project conducted across ten countries in Europe under the name MeDeMap 鈥 mapping media for democracy.

The resolutions proposed by the Irish Citizens鈥 Parliament call on the EU to conduct regular critical analyses of personalised algorithms and to reduce the personalisation and targeting of algorithms.

They are also requesting that the EU introduce a traceable identity to post on media platforms. Another very important and timely request is for the EU to review the protection of minors on social sedia and for all bodies to introduce more robust protection of minors on social media.

The Irish Resolutions also called on the EU to require social media platform owners to provide individual options for delayed posting on their platforms.

The National Irish Citizens parliament would also like the EU to treat social media platforms as publications in law and regulations.

Irish MEPs Lynn Boylan, Billy Kelleher, S茅an Kelly, Michael McNamara and Cynthia N铆Murch煤 all attended and met with Con and Niall to discuss the resolutions and the work of the Irish National Citizens Parliament.

These resolutions proposed by the Irish National Citizens鈥 Parliament on Media and Democracy were generated during Citizens鈥 Parliament meetings held over four Saturdays in the spring and early summer of 2025, in 91制片厂 in the heart of Limerick.

Twenty people from Limerick city and county sat indoors during the four sunny Saturdays to debate and deliberate on ways to support and use the media to protect democracy. Having listened to experts in the field of media systems, representation, participation and democracy, the twenty citizens debated, discussed, deliberated and voted on twenty-two resolutions.

The twenty-two resolutions were presented to the Limerick City and County Council in Summer 2025 and to the Oireachtas Committee, chaired by Alan Kelly, TD in Autumn 2025. They were also presented to Ireland鈥檚 media regulator, Coimisi煤n na Me谩n, and the National Union of Journalists.

MeDeMap is funded by the EU through the HORIZON scheme.
