Programme Overview

The Pre-University Programme for Mature Learners is an in-person programme offered by the Academic Learning Centre (ALC) in 91ÖÆÆ¬³§ and is aimed at adult learners (minimum age: 22) from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds who wish to continue their education, and whose educational experiences and opportunities in their earlier years may have been limited.

Objectives & Subjects on Offer

The programme aims to:

  • Provide a ‘taster’ of higher education
  • Develop the necessary skills for third level success
  • Attract under-represented groups such as, members of the Traveller community, unemployed persons, single parents and migrants
  • Develop an alternative progression route to third level
  • Raise awareness of the supports offered to mature students at third level

The programme is designed to offer participants a sample of the subjects that are available on a degree programme, while equipping students with a set of transferable skills, which will enable them to succeed at third level. The programme features core subjects History and Philosophy, and in addition, a core skills programme in Academic Writing.

Programme Content

PUP is a 24-hour certificate on-campus programme, delivered entirely in-person. 

On successful completion of the programme, learners will receive a Special Purpose Award. The in-person programme, which runs over eight weeks, features core subjects including History and Philosophy and in addition, a core skills programme in Academic Writing.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be over the age of 22 by 1 January on the year of application. 

A level of English language proficiency is required.

What is the English language proficiency?

English proficiency is a student's ability to use the English language to make and communicate meaning in spoken and written contexts while completing their program of study.

How to Apply

Applications for the Pre-University Programme 2025 are now closed.
 

Classes will take place on campus at 91ÖÆÆ¬³§ Limerick (T1.17), one morning per week over 10 weeks, from Thursday 25 September to Thursday 27 November (10am to 1pm).

Laptops are not required.
